How to measure the GCS to assess level of consciousness

Coutii Healthy - Glasgow Coma Scale or GCS is the scale that is used to find out a person's level of consciousness. In the past, GCS is only used to find out the level of consciousness of people who suffered a head injury. However, the current GCS are also used to assess the level of awareness when giving medical emergency relief.

A person's level of consciousness can be assessed from three aspects, namely, voice (the ability to talk), and body movement. Before discussing how to find out the level of consciousness with GCS, let's discuss in advance some of the causes that make a person's consciousness is decreased.

The Cause Of The Fall In The Level Of Consciousness Of A Person

The brain is the main organ in charge of maintaining awareness. In order to work properly, the brain needs glucose and oxygen intake. Drinks such as coffee, chocolate, tea, and energy drinks containing caffeine, the stimulant effect has on the brain, which can make a person more awake. In contrast, alcohol, and certain drugs, such as tranquilizers, painkillers, drugs or epilepsy, stroke medication, can give the effect of drowsiness and reduced level of consciousness.

Certain conditions such as dementia (senile), severe head injury, shock, heart disease, liver disease, kidney failure, hypoglycemia, and stroke can also damage the brain cells so as to affect the consciousness of the person. The decline in the level of awareness of the fallout is when someone in a coma.

How To Measure The Level Of Awareness

The highest level of awareness or arguably awake completely, being in scale 15. While the lowest or comma said, is on a scale of 3.

To find out the scale of the GCS, the medical team will be checked as follows:

  • Eye

The value of the GCS that are evaluated through an examination of the eye:

  1. -If the medical team asks for open eyes and stimulates a person with pain but the eyes do not react and it remains closed, then GCS points obtained, namely 1.
  2. -If the eyes open due to the stimulation of the pain only, i.e. the GCS points 2.
  3. -If someone's eyes open just by hearing the sound or may follow a command to open the eyes of, GCS points gained 3.
  4. -If the eyes open spontaneously without orders or a touch, then the points gained 4.

  • Sound

The value of the GCS that are evaluated in the review a voice response:

  1. -If someone does not sound at all, even though it has called or stimulated pain, then that person gets 1 point.
  2. -If the sound is coming out as moans without words, i.e. the points 2.
  3. -Someone can communicate but not obvious or simply removing the words but not the sentence is clear, i.e. the GCS points 3.
  4. -If one can answer the question from the medical team but patients such as confusion or conversation not smoothly, then the points earned is 4.
  5. -Someone able to answer all questions asked correctly and fully aware of the location, orientation towards opponents talked, place, and time, then the points gained 5.

  • Movement

The value of the GCS that are evaluated in the review movement's response:

  1. -No response body movement though had already been instructed or given pain stimuli, i.e. the GCS points 1.
  2. -One can only clenched fingers and toes, or bend the legs and hands when given the pain stimuli, of the points obtained is 2.
  3. -Someone just bend and rotate the arm shoulder pain stimuli were given time, i.e. the GCS points 3.
  4. -Can someone move the body away from the source of pain when stimulated, pain points GCS gained 4. For example, a person can keep the hands when dicubit.
  5. -Body parts that hurt can move and the person examined may indicate the location of pain, i.e. the GCS points 5. For example when pain stimuli were given a hand, the hand will be raised.
  6. -Someone can perform a movement when instructed, i.e. brings about GCS points 6.

The scale of the GCS were obtained from summing the points earned from each of these three aspects of the above examinations. This scale is used as the initial stage of evaluating the condition of a person who is unconscious or recently had an accident then unconscious, before being given further aid. Even though it can be done to determine the level of awareness of, GCS could not be used to diagnose the cause of unconsciousness or coma.

First as a helper, you can report a number parties medical GCS tackle next. This calculation is useful for doctors as the basis to determine the handling, as well as to assess response to treatment is given.
